Art is a personal reflection of your identity
Art is so much more than just decoration, it’s a deeply personal reflection of who you are: your identity, values and inspirations. Whether you’re looking for a custom still life or a personalized abstract piece, commissioned artwork brings your vision to life and expresses who you are.
What is commissioned artwork and why should you consider it?
If you browse my work looking for that piece that matches with a part of your soul or your brain, but can’t find that specific painting that’s a match yet - then it's time to explore custom artwork options! For clients like you I offer commissions.
A commissioned artwork is a piece that’s specifically created for you by the artist (that would be me!). In my case this can be a still life or an abstract painting - large or big, on paper or on canvas - it’s tailor made to your wishes, your character and your inner world. Whether you’re based in Rotterdam or elsewhere, I can create a unique, commissioned painting that fits perfectly in your home.
How to start creating your custom still life or abstract artwork: the commission process
The first step is to reach out to me! Let’s have a chat about your thoughts, what you envision and if you already have some ideas yourself. Don’t worry if you don’t, because my process will guide you as well as me towards an amazing piece that will satisfy all the wishes you might not have words for yet.
After our first chat we will schedule to meet up preferrable face to face, but if that’s not manageable we will meet online. While sipping some coffee or tea we talk more about who you are, the things you value most and the home you live in. You can show me some of the artworks you might have already saved or some colours you would like me to include in your painting. When you already have an idea of where to hang the painting on your wall, it would be amazing if you could show me that too. I will also provide you with an indicated price.
What if I want to commission you as an artist, but don’t know how I want my painting to look yet?
Again, if you don’t know all of this yet for certain, relax! Breathe, take a sip from your drink and allow me to guide you through the artistic process. I will start on making sketches based on our conversation and will get back to you with these. My experience is that for still lifes this might be a little bit more straightforward than for abstracts, they might require multiple sketching rounds to really get that 100% match.
Trust me when I say these rounds are really helpful and this is where the magic happens, because it’s so much easier to give feedback on something that you already see in front of you. I noticed this is the step in the process that really guides you as my client, but also me as the artist in the right direction of your custom painting.
If you would like to browse through ideas, have a look at my available works and my portfolio.
Am I going to be involved in the process of you creating my tailored painting?
Once we finalize the sketch and you give me the greenlight, I will continue working on the painting. It might happen that I come across major decisions in the work that’s going to influence the look of it. In those cases I don’t make that decision alone. I will contact you and provide you with a choice, explaining the consequences of each direction and together we will decide. By looking at this creative process more as a collaboration is how I prevent you as well as me from unwelcome surprises in the end.
Sometimes clients don’t want to intervene with my artistic process and don’t wish to see any steps in between from sketch to finish. Others do like the updates and sometimes even like to visit the studio to see the progress. Both work for me, that’s completely up to you!
How much does a commissioned still life or abstract painting cost?
My prices don’t differ too much from my regular pricing. I add 10% to my regular prices for the customization of your piece. To give you an idea: A 30 x 40 cm painting will then be around 600 euros and a 100x100 cm will be around 1800 euros.
How long does it take you to finish the commissioned still life or abstract painting?
This depends on a lot of different factors such as other current commissions I might be working on, drying time of the paints and how many sketching rounds we need. If your piece has a strict deadline be sure to discuss it with me so I can see if it’s realistic for me to meet it. These are things we will talk about at the start of the process. I’m all for making this as transparent as possible, both for you and for myself. When your one of a kind painting is finished, you can either pick it up in my studio in Rotterdam or I can ship it to you.
