Ever since I was little, I've enjoyed eating herring (Hollandse Nieuwe) when it came into season. We would go to the market in Dordrecht and I would sit on the pavement being fully at ease eating this Dutch treat, raw salty fish with onions. The new season always starts around my birthday, June 14, and still is something I look forward to every year.
